Write-Up Skills for Lenders

This course helps new lenders and lenders-in-development learn to write an effective credit write-up. The course begins with a brief and basic overview of the content requirements for the write-up, customized to reflect your own bank’s write-up parameters. Participants discuss the special challenges of writing an effective credit memorandum, and they practice basic sentence- and paragraph-level writing skills that pertain specifically to the write-up document.

Most of the training day is spent discussing detailed writing strategies for each major section of the write-up: common challenges and pitfalls, and specific techniques for writing logical and persuasive credit arguments. Participants complete writing exercises that challenge them to identify significant case study credit risks and to disclose them in well-organized, logically developed paragraphs that are clearly and concisely written. (One day course)

This program is included in RMA’s Commercial Lending School, a 13 week credit analyst/lender development program available through the Risk Management Association.

Participant comments include:

  • “Finally, I understand what people mean when they say my write-ups are wordy. And-now I know how to fix them.”
  • “Much needed help in an area we don’t have much experience with.”
  • “This course will help me avoid just recycling the last analyst’s general approach to the write-up.”
  • “I have a lot more to say about cash flow now!”
