Detailed Overview
The Effective Credit Write-Up Overview
This program is designed for lenders and lenders-in-development who need to improve the effectiveness of their credit write-ups. Some credit experience is recommended, because much of the workshop focuses on how to craft logical and persuasive credit arguments.
Format
There are three primary exercises that last from one to three hours each. In the first exercise, participants read, critique, and revise several write-up paragraphs. This exercise focuses on the quality of the written sentences and paragraphs. Participants learn simple techniques for improved sentence structure and paragraph organization through discovery and guided discussion-no lengthy, dry lectures.
The next exercise features a write-up that is very poorly written in terms of both writing style and credit logic. Participants work in small teams to critique both aspects of the write-up and revise assigned portions of it.
The final exercise requires the teams to write sections of a write-up “from scratch.” They have analyzed a case study company’s financial exhibits prior to the workshop and are therefore prepared with an opinion about its creditworthiness. In the workshop, participants collaborate and debate with their peers to develop a credit recommendation and support it with concise, well-organized, and logical written arguments.
Objectives
The objectives of this course are to:
Help lenders recognize a quality write-up, in terms of both written expression and the underlying strength and logic of the credit arguments.
Enable lenders to critique their own write-ups, identifying both writing faults and areas where organization and logic can be improved.
Give lenders a chance to read, critique, and revise write-up excerpts, learning new skills to apply to their very next write-up assignment.
Give lenders an opportunity to take a one-day “time out” to learn new skills that will improve the overall effectiveness of their write-ups and enhance others’ perceptions of their credit judgment.
Provide financial institutions with a highly customized approach to developing their lenders’ and analysts’ write-up skills, with learning materials that feature their own write-up formats and sample write-up cases.
